The film adaptation of Estonian author Indrek Hargla's Melchior books, has hit Estonian movie screens and is already proving to be a blockbuster. Hargla's books, with their thrilling plots that bring medieval times to life, have been popular in Estonia for years and have been translated into Finnish, French, Hungarian, Latvian, German and English.
The story takes place in medieval Tallinn, where much of filming also took place. In collaboration with the Melchior the Apothecary film crew, Tallinn City Museum has created an audience programme “On the paths of Melchior the Apothecary”, combining film art and science. In an uncommon move, a trilogy of Melchior films were shot as one project. Good news for international audiences, though, as all three films will be available on Amazon to stream next year.

Explore the Region: Tartu and South Estonia
|
In this instalment of our new Explore the Region series, we look towards South Estonia, home to Estonia’s second largest city, Tartu, and much more. Tartu is perhaps best known as a seat of knowledge as it is home to the University of Tartu, one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. It’s also home to many great museums, including the AHHAA Science Centre and Estonian National Museum.
South Estonia is distinctively hilly compared to the rest of Estonia. Among these hills you’ll find the highest point in the Baltics states, Suur Munamägi at 318 metres, Lake Peipus – Europe’s fourth largest lake, and Setomaa – a region inhabited by an ethnic and linguistic minority renowned, admired and loved for their impressive vocal heritage, traditional villages and food. Direct flights from Helsinki to Tartu have resumed, bringing you there in just 45 minutes. You can also reach South Estonia by bus, train or car in two and a half hours from Tallinn.

New openings and re-openings
|
Tallinn’s Go Hotel Shnelli has reopened after the biggest renovation since it first opened doors in 2005. The renovation included 124 superior and standard rooms, along with two family rooms. The renovation not only brought a modern, Scandinavian aesthetic but also many energy efficient features like LED lighting. Go Hotel Shnelli sits right between the Tallinn Old Town and Telliskivi, on Tallinn’s central railway station.
Two new restaurants have also opened in the Tallinn Old Town. 38 Restaurant promises to push the boundaries of traditional flavours in Chef Joonas Koppel’s signature style with Nordic cuisine. Peet Ruut Restaurant offers locally sourced food and atmosphere with vegan options.

Estonia remains a secure travel destination
|
Despite Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Estonia remains a safe and carefree travel destination. The security situation in Estonia is normal; Estonia is a long-time member of both the European Union and NATO (since 2004), and all services are working as usual. In fact, Estonia is gearing up for a lovely summer after all Covid restrictions have been removed. There are over 50 direct flight connections with Tallinn Lennart Meri Airport, with new routes being added.
Continuing to travel to and do business with Estonia keeps our partnerships and economic relationships strong. Visitors can feel confident travelling to Estonia, and we warmly welcome you!
